As the curtains fell for the 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala here at the Nishagandhi auditorium, the Malayalam movies made their presence felt.
The festival featured over 160 films from 72 countries. 11 packages of films including ‘The Human Spirit: Films on Hope and Rebuilding’ which reflects the efforts of overcoming struggles, were screened as part of the festival.
The category included six films: Jayaraj’s ‘Vellapokkathil’, Mel Gibson’s ‘Apocalypto’, Benh Zeitlin’s ‘Beasts of The Southern Wind’, Fisher Steven’s ‘Before The Flood’, Justin Chadwick’s ‘Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’, and Wim Wenders’s ‘Pope Francis: A Man of His Word’.
Two Malayalam films–‘Ee. Ma. Yau.’, and ‘Sudani from Nigeria’, were part of the competition section.
* Malayali director Lijo Jose Pellissery won the Silver Crow Pheasant award for the best director for ‘Ee Ma Yau’.
* ‘Taking the Horses to eat Jalebis’ director Anamika Haksar won the award for best debutant director.
* "I take pride in winning this award in a state which have overcome flood," said Lijo Jose Pellissery.
* 'Ee Ma Yau' also won the NETPAC award for best Asian film in competition.
* 'Sudani from Nigeria' directed by Zakariya won FIPRESCI award for best Malayalam film.
