ESRO-2B: European Space Research Organisation launches 1st satellite

ESRO-2B, intended to study cosmic rays and solar X-rays, is the first successful satellite launch by ESRO.

On 17 May 1968, the first European Space Research Organisation satellite in orbit, ESRO-2B, was successfully launched on a Scout-B rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA, and became the first mission controlled by teams at the European Space Operations Centre, Darmstadt, Germany.

The ESRO-2 satellites were the first developed by ESRO, with ESRO-2B launched after ESRO-2A failed to reach orbit around Earth, becoming the first mission controlled by teams at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany.

Also known as the International Radiation Investigation Satellite, ESRO-2B was launched with the Scout B rocket from Vandernberg Air Force Base in California.

THE EUROPEAN SPACE RESEARCH ORGANISATION (ESRO)
The European Space Research Organisation (ESRO) was an international organisation founded by European States with the intention of jointly pursuing scientific research in outer space. It was founded in 1964. Between 1964 and 1975, ESRO developed eight small scientific satellites launched by NASA and started the realisation of seven others. Towards the end of its existence, the European Space Research Organisation had expanded its field of intervention to include space applications in the field of telecommunications and meteorology. ESRO has also carried out space-related studies by launching sounding rockets. Following a general overhaul of the European Space Program decided in 1973, the European Space Research Organisation was merged with ELDO to form the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1975.
